It is a small village with Milford Sound Lodge, Blue Duck Bar & Cafe, Milford Sound Wharf, airport and private accommodation for local workers and track walkers. There is petrol available in Milford but you will need a credit card with pin number. Allow time to take a stroll around the foreshore, listen out for the local birds that frequent the area. Pay a visit to the Blue Duck Cafe and Bar and enjoy a coffee while admiring the views of Mitre Peak. If you are lucky our resident family of weka may come out to say hello!. A visit to Milford would not be complete without stopping off at the Milford Discovery Centre. Right here, you get to see a world of primeval creatures and exotic habits. Due to the unique underwater environment, the rare Black Coral and 300-year-old coral 'trees' can be found here. The biggest 'problem' of Milford Sound is the sandfly! I sprayed heaps of insect repellent and I still had several sandfly bites that left scars on my legs for about 2 years. Do bring enough medication for insect bites! An Underwater Observatory, located in one of the bays of Milford Sound, enables visitors to see black coral, red coral, anemones, starfish and other fishes that live in the fiord. Visitors can peek below the top layer of water to view beautiful sea creatures and corals that are living under water. Some visitors come to Milford Sound via the Milford Track while others take a bus ride to the cruise wharf. The Milford Track spans about 5.3km from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound over the Mackinnon Pass. It takes about three to four days to reach there using this track. A drive from Te Anau will pass Cascade Creek, Upper Hollyford Valley and Homer Tunnel. During peak periods, the visitor centre tends to be crowded with people.
